Also known as Zoroaster (after the Greek version, Ζωροάστρης, Zōroastrēs) Zarathustra was an Iranian prophet and founder of Zoroastrianism, the national religion of the Sassanian Empire of Persia. Efforts to date Zarathustra vary widely. Scholarly estimates are usually roughly near 1200 BC, making him a candidate as the founder of the earliest religion based on revealed scripture, while others place him anywhere between the 18th and the 6th centuries BC.
